Azraelle
They decided it was time to head back the next day. Azraelle knew it was the safest decision but dreaded the idea of returning to the castle and leaving the freedom that had showered her the day before. She had not felt as liberated as that in a long time. Fighting with Tolemus had been the closest thing, but Tolemus was only a demi-god and she could not push the limits of her physical skills as far as she had with Xadrion.
Theyâd left early but set a carefree pace and the horses ambled slowly side to side. It would take longer to reach the castle at that pace, but neither of them seemed to care.
âYou mentioned Nyx lives in the Underworld. Did you live there, too?â Xadrion asked as they rode.
âYes, and no. I lived in a realm within the Pantheon of the Underworld. Nyx lives within the House of Hades,â Azraelle began. Azraelle didnât want to tell him everything, not when so much of where she resided had been kept a fiercely guarded secret for as long as it had existed. Eviria was her home, a place she had crafted for herself to escape the solitude sheâd had enforced upon her for the beginning centuries of her life. Its secrets were protected to keep her Ravens safe and to keep the army for being used for any unsanctioned purposes.
âHades?â Xadrion interrupted, seemingly unable to stop himself from jumping in.
âYes. Your uncle, I believe,â Azraelle said. âWhat did Hera tell you of the gods?â
âI only remember parts of stories. Not enough that anything makes sense.â
âChaos is the creator of everything, but it was Nyx and Erebus who created the godâs realms as we know them â Olympus, the Underworld and Atlantis. When the realms were created, it fell to the children of Chaos to monitor them. Eros quickly disappeared and has not been seen since, while Tartarus and Gaia made the eventual decision to leave their physical forms to give more to creation. Erebus and Nyx were left to govern the realms,â Azraelle explained.
âCronus and Rhea rose to power together, but when their sons â Zeus, Poseidon and Hades â overthrew them, Nyx ultimately made the decision to allow them dominion over the realms. Zeus gained Olympus, Poseidon gained Atlantis, and Hades was handed the Underworld. Nyx remained with him, assisting Hades in the significant task of handling the dead. Over the millennia, Nyx committed many of her own children to the House of Hades.â
It was the longest Azraelle had talked in Xadrionâs presence for. He was silent now as he listened, his eyes keeping on her as they rode. He looked entranced.
âCharon and Thanatos directly serve Hades. The rest of my siblings are spread through many realms, but as part of my responsibility to Nyx and to Death I was given command of one of Deathâs armies â the Ravens. We lived in Eviria, a hidden realm within the Underworld,â Azraelle said.
âYou were a commander?â
âI was their primus, commander to them since their very inception.
